Keep Your Washer Smelling Clean and Fresh

One of the biggest problems with washing machines is that they can sometimes get musty or moldy. Here are some tips on how to prevent this from happening, so you can keep your washer smelling clean and fresh.

  • Use the appropriate amount of detergent because if you use too much, it will leave soap and film that can lead to mold growth.
  • Make sure you remove wet laundry from the washer immediately after the cycle is done.
  • Leave the washer door open after you finish doing laundry, so it can dry out.
  • Wipe the door seal and glass with a dry cloth after every use.
  • Clean the soap dispenser on your washer on a monthly basis.
  • Be sure to run a cleaning cycle every month consisting of hot water and a cup of chlorine bleach without any laundry in the machine.
  • Use a dehumidifier to remove the humidity from the air, especially if your washer is in a damp area like a basement.

If you currently have a musty or moldy washer, you can clean the washer’s rubber gasket in the door thoroughly with a borate-based detergent and a scrub brush. Be sure to follow the directions on the detergent label, and don’t forget to rinse the detergent from the washer. Run a full wash cycle with hot water and a cup of bleach. Don’t add any laundry to the machine during the cycle and open the door after the cycle is done.
